May 30, 2016 In the Rice Paddies

How are you guys????????????

Sorry a little bit low on time today so we'll see how much i can get typed out in the little time that i have left.

I just walked in and got new contacts in the time span of like 5 minutes here lol. Taiwan is the best.

The Dynamic duo! awesome :)

Yeah after planning at 9:30 pm  you have personal time where, if you want to, you can play board games. I personally prefer to write in my journal, do a quick ab workout, and read the scriptures, but sometimes Elder X must be appeased haha.

A couple random experiences from the week: This past Monday we shared with one of our investigators the Plan of Salvation. And we ran into a problem that we run into a lot in Taiwan, reincarnation. We had these little picture cut outs, but everytime we explained to her and bore testimony about the Resurrection, she would just take the little piece for resurrection and put it AFTER the 3 kingdoms of glory... She's like yeah i believe this plan, but.....She also believes that all of the professors at Harvard are aliens though sooooooooo

We got invited to sing a hymn at a traditional funeral this weekend. It was an interesting experience. They set up these big like portable tents with a bunch of small straight-backed golden chairs. And they say almost the entire thing in Taiwanese. At the end, you bow to the deceased, and then they give you like a small towel as you leave. It was a really interesting experience.

When we were contacting up in our area this one day we ran into this lady who was hauling these huge bags of peanuts onto the back of her scooter. She gave us a bunch of free ones so we got to eat raw peanuts for the first time. They were kinda nasty to be honest, i prefer some good ole peanut butter ;)

This week we also met a really cool oooop out of time

Love and miss you guys a ton! HAave a great week!

May 23, 2016 Elder Sroud: New Trainee

How were you guys this week?

Anyways in terms of this week. I always forget all of the important stuff to tell you guys about but ill do my best to remember some details. So im still in the 4 man apartment. Besides my trainee we also have a new incomer, an Elder Lai who is Taiwanese. He's a funny dude, always plays the exact same 4 EFY songs every morning, one of which sounds like Owl City is singing it.And he LOVES playing board games. This guy has like an entire suitcase full of board games its hilarious. Every night after we finish planning i'll do a little ab workout then he comes in and he's like When are you coming to play??????? He particularly loves one called Star Realms if you've ever heard of it. He also knows the most hilarious english he always says what the heck?? When something crazy happens.

In terms of my actual companion, he's a bro. He played LAX in high school. He's from Orlando, Florida, and lived in the same neighborhood that JJ Reddick, Jameer Nelson, and Quentin Richardson used to live in. He's super brave about going and trying new things. Definitely still in the adjusting stages. Lemme know if there's anything else you want to know about him.

This week we had a cool miracle. We saw this lady walking with her kids and waved to her but they just kept walking so we were like ahh whatever forget it. Butt then we decided w guy came up and was like hey are you the mormons? Turns out he has a lot of interest in the church. He went ahead and sat down with us at a family mart and came to the church the next day for a tour.
e might as well go over there and try to talk to her. While i was talking to the mom (who wants us to go to her tea party and preach to all of her tea party ladies) this super

One of the people we've been working with gave us this Taiwanese style chicken off the street, like head and everything. So i was adventurous and went ahead and tried the whole thing - eyeballs, brains everything. It was pretty good. Amy definitely would have been disturbed, we were like straight carnivores.

Other hilarious story. So in Taiwan they have these "massage" places everywhere where a lot more sketchy stuff goes on at them than massages, if you catch my drift. So anyways we contact this lady who says we can come back later and visit her at her work and share some church stuff with her. When we show up at her place, it's one of these massage places and we ended up sharing the restoration of the gospel with her in this sketchy back room. haha yeah so that happened....she had no interest in the gospel.

It rained quite a bit so got pretty soaked.

Heres a missionary scripture for you guys from Alma 26:22 "Yeah, he that repenteth and exerciseth faith and bringeth forth good works, and prayeth continually without ceasing unto such is given to know the mysteries of God; yeah unto such it shall be given to reveal things which never have been revealed, yea and it shall be given unto such to bring thousands of souls to repentance, even as it has been given unto us to bring these our bretheren to repentance."

Love you guys hope you have a great week!

May 16, 2016 Elder Andrew Turns 20!

Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes! While i am now officially halfway through i will not be less than a year until next week. I have to say the absolute best part of my birthday (tbh most of the day i forgot it was my birthday, kinda like my first mission birthday) was seeing that AWESOME pic of you guys. so much fun to see the fam. You guys look great! Now all that's missing is the other half up in springville :)

That's rough for the hamster with the wisdom teeth. I remember the painnnn. Did she do anything really loopy?

Senor when i told everyone here that you had osteoperosis they didn't believe me at first. I told them yeah now i can't hug him as hard or he'll snap

What made Tim's talk so impactful? What did he share? I've always really appreciated Tim, the type of person that he is, and his testimony

In other news, this week was exciting as I picked up my new companion, fresh out of the MTC. They fly in on Wednesday, get a little orientation and then on Friday we all go up to 台中 (tai zhong) to pick them up. They have this meeting where you randomly grab someone as they're coming up and sit with them for the meeting then at the end you open up this envelope and see who your real trainer is. Crazy enough, i randomly picked my trainee as he came in! He's a pretty cool bro, his name is Elder Stroud. Went to BYU for Summer and Fall Term then came out on his mish.. haha he's a funny guy, but i can tell that everything right now is a big adjustment for him. Kinda a culture shock. And its just so funny because i know EXACTLY how he's feeling but i feel like it's kinda just like one of those things that has to be worked out over time. I've tried really hard since he came out to just get him pumped up/full of faith about the work (telling him an ding is the promised land, how we're going to see miracles, etc) and he's going right along with it. He's got a lot of faith and im excited to work with him. We kinda each wrote out our vision goals and plans for this upcoming 2 movecalls. Should be a blast.

On his first full day we had to take care of some small random details, like getting him a bike. While we were in a 7 we got contacted by some Jehovah's witnesses. It was super funny it was like they were trying to be so inconspicuous about it. Like bought drinks and sat down at the table in front of us and then nonchalantly turned around and asked us what we were doing. After we told them we were reading the bible. Then that got em going and we eventully caught on that they were witnesses. They were super nice. It was just funny because after quoting some scriptures to us they felt like they had just convinced us of the truthfulness of their church or whatever but in reality it was all stuff that we as Mormon's believe as well! Like why we experience dificulties and challenges in life, etc. We exchanged tracts.

On Sunday we got treated to this lasagna dinner by a lady who's staying in Taiwan to do family history for a little bit. She had all of the missionaries over for a big dinner. It was super good.

Can't really think of much else exciting. Let me know if there's anything else you wanna know.

A thought from Romans 12:21 "Be not overcome of evil but overcome evil with good" Just be a good person, do good things, help those in need, lift up those who need lifting, think outside of ourselves and our own needs. If everyone would just be GOOD, i feel like the world would be a lot better :)

Love you guys and hope you have a great week!

May 9, 2016 Talked with Family Yesterday!

Isn't that the weirdest thing to think that we saw each other yesterday? You guys all look great! I totally forgot to wish mom a happy mother's day though! Happy Mother's Day mommy! I love you so much!! I hope you got to relax a little bit!

That's super cool what you're learning about Isaiah Mommy! How much time do you spend a day reading the old testament now?

Has smeag been looking for a job? Yeah he tells me about Aubrey. He says he likes her because he loves being around her, just hanging out with her. I think it's a good thing.

congrats on 7 years left and counting senor! haha

I'll try to take a look at some of those references that you mentioned Senor. I really appreciate both yours and mom's examples.

Let's see if i can think of some highlights from this week - oh here's something to give you an idea of how hot it is here. So since we're biking a lot, we sweat a ton which is kinda normal. But i started noticing that the next day, when my pants had dried out they had these white stripes all over them and i realized that it was the dried salt from my sweat. How nasty is that! I took a picture to remember the moment haha.

Like i told you guys yesterday, I found out on Thursday of last week that i'm going to be training a new missionary. I go up to the "train the trainers" meeting on Wednesday then pick up my trainee on Friday up in 台中 (not Taichung LOL). It's kinda stressful but also really exciting. I hope he likes to run in the mornings :)

Can;t remember if i told you guys about this last week, but this upcoming week we should be able to start working with the husband in a family in our ward. He's not a member, but he comes to church like every Sunday and said recently that he would be willing to start taking the lessons to prepare for baptism. His son is about to turn 8 and he hopes that he can be the one to baptize him. Still a long way to go before that (i.e. overcoming some of his concerns about commandments, helping him actually feel of the truthfulness of our message etc). Still though its a glimmer of hope haha.

We've had some success with a couple of really cool less active members coming back to church.

Saturday we had a ward activity where we had a picnic at a local park. Turns out one of the elders in our apartment has an american football so we threw a football and frisbee around for a while which was super fun. Ate a ton of food. One thing that ive slowly realized on my mission is that i dont enjoy eating as much as i used to :O Like when i first came on my mission i was like yeah chi dao bao (eat until full) restaurants are the bestttt and now im like they just make me uncomfortable. What has happened to me????

Anyways, spiritual thought : Romans 9:6 "For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel." This week we can all be pondering how we can become not only Israel but OF Israel.

Love you guys!

May 2, 2016 E. Nelson in Rural Taiwan - Ryan Scoville Visits Houston

So this week what happened...

On Monday for P-day a member drove us up to this really beautiful water reservoir. On the way we also stopped in the hometown of mangoes in taiwan, a place called yu jin. Mangoes here are so good and i dont remember them being very tasty back home. Taiwanese fruit is something that will definitely be missed. Gotta make the most of this summer.

Saturday we went to a less active member who we've been working with's house to help her dad out with taking out some weeds/grass stuff in their backyard garden. We had these hoe/shovel like things that we were going at the ground with. Then made a wall out of a bunch of bricks. Her nephew came too so as we worked we were able to get to know him a little bit. He was super curious about our church and stuff but right now hes 當兵 (dang bing) which is the required military service for all guys in Taiwan. Should be trying to find a time to ball with him later though. Anddd the sister, a sister lin (who is a returned missionary) came to church on Sunday for the first time in years. It was kinda cool because in Taiwan here there are a bunch of people from the philipines who come to work in the factories or whatever. And her work is to help out these philipinos when they get in tough situations (her english is really good). Anyways sunday at church there was a philipino member who got up and bore his testimony in english and i think it really hit home with her.

Another miracle on Sunday : another less  active member who we had been working with and (without us inviting him to do so) brought his older sister (who is also less active) and her son. They acted like completely active members. Super cool.

Im still kinda off without running and stuff... That's kinda the name of the game though i guess.

Recently, during personal study im starting to pick apart my patriarchal blessing (like gifts, warnings, prophecies, promised blessings) and i'm hoping to direct my studies from that in the coming months.

Me and my companion can communicate fine, but yes bananas are still a theme. Long rides on bike are ok. No investigators yet.

A thought from the week - Moroni 8:16 "...perfect love casteth out all fear." No matter what struggles we're going through, or what those we love are going through I know that as long as we show true love for everyone around us, we cannot fail.

Love and miss you guys a ton!
