Easter SundayMarch 27, 2016

Sorry to hear you guys got sick! That really stinks, especially around easter. Speaking of Easter, guess what we did for Easter??? Absolutely nothing. I reminded myself about 5 times throughout the day that even though no one was acting like it was Easter, it was in fact Easter. Like even the members don't celebrate it here. But, for our English class this week we're going to be doing an Easter party where they can learn about some of the culture around Easter as well as the meaning behind it.

In our cooking adventures this week, we made a lasagna (lncluding homemade noodles because you can't find lasagna noodles anywhere over here), sweet potatoe bread, perfected corn bread, apple bread (from homemade apple sauce), and 抓餅, a green onion tortilla type thing that a lot of people will eat for breakfast here.

On Saturday this week we had a really cool opportunity to go up to the temple with (Brother H) so that he could receive his own endowment. He's the guy who's in a wheelchair, and we were asked to go up to help him (as you can imagine there are some difficulties with that). It was cool because we got to take the high speed rail up to 台北 (Taipei). It gets you all the way up from 高雄 (Gao xiong) up to 台北 in like an hour and a half. It was also a neat experience because it was my first time hearing the endowment in chinese. They showed the video from the 80s which is also the first time i'd seen that video. I could actually understand almost all of it, it was just a lot harder at the veil haha because getting everything word for words is hard enough in english! It was cool though i had a really spiritual experience afterwards in the celestial room, kinda like Heavenly Father was telling me "Keep going, you're doing the right thing."

So are two recent converts, brother L and D are both doing well.  X did not come to church again this Sunday because apparently he had bad allergies. Like he told us that he woke up at 8:30 but then he fell back asleep because he wasn't feeling well. He's also going to be switching jobs soon because he had a really bad experience at work (boss hit him and stuff). He told us he wants to switch over to a job where he works nights and sleeps during the day because it's a higher paying job. So, he said he's trying to start to get his body used to that kind of schedule. And because of that he doesn't know if he's going to be able to come to church. Was there anything else that we could/can do to help him? Right now kind of at a loss. He had such a strong desire for baptism and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost but ugh i just don't know. Pray for him!

Brother F  is also confusing us recently. He told us that he can't for sure say right now that he believes in God but he believes that there's something up there in that space above the earth, like a higher power. He has finished the Book of Mormon but he's told us that he believes praying will not have any affect on him being able to understand the truths of these things. Just read and go to church are good enough he says.

Besides that, right now we don't have a ton of investigators/people to teach. We are going to be doing a lot of finding this week. This week we also went over and helped this investigator (who has no interest in the gospel - in the past was baptized into the Jehovah's witnesses church) cut down the beams from his roof, so he could put new ones in (sounds less sketchy than it actually was).

As far as a spiritual thought this week, i guess i just want to bear my testimony about the Savior's Atonement and Resurrection, seeing as it is Easter Weekend. Because Jesus Christ died for us and resurrected 3 days later, every person who comes to earth will all live again. I know this is true and am so grateful for what this knowledge has brought to me and our family.

Thank you guys for all of the love and support! Hope y'all have a great week!

March 21, 2016 Week 45

So,  the 11 year old kid got baptized this week and confirmed the next day in church yayy. Everything went off without a hitch. He's a cute little thug.

Then there is Y-  He really did have a desire to be baptized, and was talking the entire week especially about the opportunity to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. So Saturday we go ahead with the baptism. He got really stressed out when he found out that there had to be a program to go with it. So eventually we make it downstairs and after the 2 kids who were getting baptized before him, we go down into the water. When he came out of the water, he had the biggest,  grin on his face. And as i was changing he told my companion that because of the feelings he had at his baptism he felt like his faith had been strengthened. So the baptism went off without a hitch and then Sunday he just didn't show up at church for the confirmation. We called him like 5 times and we still haven't gotten a hold of him. I'm trying not to stress out about it, but i'm worrying for him. Please send prayers his way!

And this computer just said that i only have 5 minutes left...ooops.

Ummm besides that other random stuff: Z, the guy who got baptized last week wore a shirt and tie to church this week for the first time. He was so funny he kept saying he felt like he was going to work, asking us if he'd get used to it, etc. He's doing well.

Our CO monitor went off in the middle of the night one night, only to find out the levels actually weren't lethal and after switching the batteries it was all good to go. Still kinda freaky.

ahhh i cant remember anything else sorry.

This week i was ponderizing Acts 20:35 "...remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said it is more blessed to give than to receive." Maybe this week we can all think of some way that we can go out of our way to help someone else.

Love you guys! Hope you have a great week!

Thats really interesting about what brother liu said. I wonder if we will be ever be allowed into China..

Emma's engaged?? wow "nothing happens on your mission" said no one ever..

That's coool the missionaries got to share their testimonies in sacrament meeting..what are the elders in our ward like right now?
X  got baptized!!!!!!!!!! Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh wahooooooooo. haha it was a really great service, i tried to attach some pics. We started out the night going and getting burritos together at this nearby mexican restaurant then headed over to the church and got stuff ready. A couple of sisters who had helped us in lessons shared their testimonies, then there was the actual baptism, then afterwards he bore his testimony about the blessings of commandment keeping. He told us afterwords that when he was in the water he had this overwhelming feeling of still and peace. We encouraged him to write down his feelings so that he could remember for the future. He is so stronggggg, a total bro. Everyone in the ward loves him and is inviting him over for dinner and stuff. He also has beautiful hair. Also random fact, he likes playing the piano. He'll like memorize how to play the songs and he knows a lot of sweet classics. He came to the single FHE activity just to jam away for a few minutes. We walked in on him playing "The River flows in you" Might pick it back up from him ;) It was hilarious, that night we got a call from the sisters. They were like what's your favorite hymn? My comp said All Creatures of our God and King. They proceeded to belt out "baptism" to the tune of All Creatures of our God and King. haha i was like only on the mission...

Y is looking to get baptized this Saturday... we''ll have really good moments in lessons, like this week when we were talking with him about Enduring to the End, he was like if someone decided to be baptized, why would they ever decide to leave the church? And i was like lol good question man. And when we told him about helping him get baptized on the 26th or something he was like that far away?? Cant we do it any sooner??? And i asked him why he wanted to get baptized and he said so that he could have the influence of the holy ghost more in his life.

is still looking good to be baptized this weekend as well. His family went to korea this week so we haven't been in much contact with him. We've also met a couple of other really cool people in the past couple weeks. So we'll see where things go with them.

This past week ive been sick with sore throat, congestion, headache, cough stuff then this morning i was feeling pretty dizzy. Ibuprofen has been magic though in helping me get through the day haha

In the adventures of food this week we made mommy's homemade bread into a cakeish form for dad's bday, and put a candle on top. I blew it out in honor of senor. Happy 65th! Im lucky to have such an awesome dad! Glad you're getting to celebrate it for a couple days. Ithink you can now officially get ALL of the senior discounts haha.We also made homemade dumplings from scratch this week! They actually turned out pretty good, it was fun but afterwards our kitchen was an absolute mess. We also made these oatmeal cookies.

My companion got a package sent to him this last week with an AMERICAN FOOTBALL in it, so last monday that's what we did for P-day. It was so much fun, i miss playing sports with the bros. A lot of people here would rather do other stuff than play sports

This week I went ahead and reread "Through God's Eyes" by the new apostle. I feel like the talk is like meant just for us missionaries. The key to being happy/successful in the work really is to see the people that we're working with through God's eyes, with the eyes of a loving parent. If that's how we see them, we will do everything that we can to help them. I also reread Preident Uchtorf's talk where he tells the story about Great Aunt Rose. I really liked how he quoted Emily Dickinson's "Forever is composed of nows" or something like that. We need to take advantage of every moment to be happy, to help other people, and to better know our Savior Jesus Christ. I know that he lives! I am so grateful for this opportunity to serve Him more fully for 2 years!

I love you guys and hope you have an awesome week!

March 7, 2016

How is everybody??

Gavin got called to this mission whattttttttttttttttttttttttttt that is so cool!!!!!! ahhhh wait when is his reporting date??? That would be the coolest thing ever if we were companions.

Sounds like the ballet was fun senor! followed by an absolutely revolting dinner haha.

Hope hamster's recovering okay..

Im guessing you guys aren't going to mustang island for spring break huh..

ooooh an astros game would be fun to go to, bro down with Ryan. ALthough the red socks tickets are probably superrrrrrr expensive

Comp is good. We continue to get along fine (which i've been pretty blessed with on my mission, people that i can get along with).

the food is also gooood. This week we made our own noodles, we made cornbread, an alfredo sauce (alfredo pizza). Btw ill have you know that all this stuff we've been making is us improving, just going based on what we kinda know from previous experiences with cooking. haha its fun

The weather's starting to heat up a little bit again. Getting the nice sweat on in the suit pants on the way to church.

The language is impossible. haha jk but seriously. I can now read the BOM in chinese which is super helpful in lessons. Recently ive been working with these kind of flashcards called HSK if you know what they are.

The people are AWESOME. X's baptism got moved to this upcoming Saturday because there was a relief society activity on the same day and they thought that it would be too hard to do both. this week we shared about the priesthood and missionary work with him. He should be good to go for this Saturday. This last sunday for the single FHE activity he brought the game. Back home  I had  never played so many random fun games as i ahve since coming to Taiwan.

Next Saturday , the kid from a part member family should be getting baptized. Random note about him - he loves nerf guns.

That's awesome that the elders on that end are seeing an upsurge in the work. Have there been any recent baptisms in our ward?

I wrote down that talk you mentioned pops and will be studying it again this week.

thats super good you've been able to get to the y recently mommy! you're probably in better shape than i am. Where are you at in the Old testament? You're right, dad's a STUD.

We kinda saw a miracle this week as one of the less active's that we'd been meeting with told us "when i read the BOM things in my life just go better and i dont know why." And we were like, well let's talk about that."

You're totally right about not focusing on baptisms senor, but it's kinda hard not to focus on it at the same time when we have a worldwide broadcast from the general authorities titled "Preach Repentance and Baptize converts" My personal view on it is that that should always be our goal - to help people to fully repent and be able to prepare to be baptized but we shouldn't let that cloud our judgement/reason.
You guys are awesome and blessed for having the missionaries over for dinner. How often do you have them over? Seems like its pretty often...or maybe i just have absolutely no sense of time.

So this thursday we had a special Zone Conference which is basically where a bunch of missionaries get together and are inspired by some of our leaders (i.e. mission president, his wife, zone leaders, assistants to the president, etc.). It was full of both physical (Costco pizza) and spiritual nourishment. One of the biggest things that i took from it is the importance of helping our investigators truly come to know the godhead (look at the January Liahona talk by Elder Holland if you have time), which is especially true in a country like this. A lot of times, missionaries will just launch straight into a discussion about the restoration of the gospel, Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon etc but these people don't even understand the concept of a loving Heavenly Father. It also made me think about my own relationship with Heavenly Father - do I really know Him? Do I really have a relationship with him?

Yeah anyways i love and miss you guys a ton! Hope you have an awesome week!
