February 29, 2016 Leap Year!!!

HERRO FAMIRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Ahhh sorry not a lot of time im bad at thiss.

Mommy - our ward mission leader cuts our hair! Thats what he does for a living

Sooooooooooooooo this week wassssss another good one in 圓山. Our investigators are doing well. J had his baptismal interview this last Saturday and he passed! He's looking good for this Saturday. We were really worried about sharing the law of tithing with him because a lot of his goals in life right now have to do with getting himself financially stable for the next phase of his life (i.e. paying off his car, looking to get himself a place to live etc). And at first, when we shared it with him he was like wow that is a lot of money. But then , actually just recently Phil shared a little tithing miracle with me that he had had and i felt prompted to share it with him. then we shared a scripture from 3 Nephi 24 about the windows of heaven. He was like "ok no problems." His faith is so STRONG it's amazing. When we told him about the word of wisdom he was like yeah because i wake up at 4 i have to drink a cup of coffee a lot of times but no problem i'll stop. I'll just eat some more vitamins. So keep him in your prayers as he prepares for baptism this Saturday!

W has a goal to get baptized on the 12th but we may have to move it because he can't meet with us that often because of his stressful work and stuff. He's hilarious though, he loves basketball so we balled with him for a little this last saturday. He's always telling me the latest on the NBA/teaching me basketball terms in chinese.

DX (the little kid) is still looking good for the 19th. Hes a cool little kid.

Brother F keeps plowing through the Book of Mormon. He was in Taipei this week so we didn't get to see him but he said that he plans on having finished the Book of Mormon by the time he gets back.

Me and my companion have decided to start componderizing (contemplate/ponder/memorize) ? together (if you can combine 2 words why not 3?) - 2 Nephi 2:8 "Wherefore how great the importance to make these things known unto the inhabitants of the earth that they may know that there is no flesh that can dwell in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah, who layeth down his life according to the flesh, and taketh it again by the power of the spirit that he may bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, being the first that should rise." Go share the good news! :)

I love guys a ton hope you have a great week!

P.S. I almost forgot this week i tried 魚蛋 for the first time which is where the fish has like eggs inside it and then they just cook the whole thing. I refer to it as pregnant fish. It was quite interesting.

February 22, 2016 Power Week of Chinese New Year

HERRO FAMIRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

I would love for you to come be a fly on the wall over here mommy :)

Sounds like you guys had a fun sacrament meeting. And smeag's more brave than any of us! He's gonna be a baller missionary, i never went up andshared my testimony like at all before my mission.

I'll be staying in the same area. I feel like it's finally an area where i can really get to know the members and the area well. As far as my companion..he's a super interesting guy. We don't have identical personalities but i feel like our personalities work well together. He just hit his year mark last week but we were still feeling kinda sick so we didn't celebrate or anything haha.

That's superfun that you got to see Wei Ren's family. Sounds like they've been doing well.

lol'ing on this end at how the girls still do pinewood derby overthere. Only in Texas.

so is mom actually gonna make it up to see the grandkids?

Jared's going to mexico whatttttt hahaha good thing they clarified spanish speaking. There might have been some confusion there.

you pumped to hit up the district senor?

85 people died in that cold streak?? Thats crazy. It was cold where we were but not that bad. Geez thats pretty scary

Ummm desserts dont really exist in Taiwan - you could buy some fruit and call it taiwanese  haha jk one thing that they'll eat for a dessert here is like a green bean soup. Like not actual green beans but like small beans that are green, which i think is essentially just beans water and brown sugar or something like that. I have a dumpling recipe if you want to try that.

So yeah this week is what is called "power week." Basically, during the chinese new year like absolutely no missionary work gets done so they came up with this idea for having power week after the holiday to get everyone pumped up about missionary work again. They cut the studies down to a half hour of personal study (lame), a half hour of comp study, no language study at all, and we have to eat our meals on the run instead of having a set time to sit down and eat food. On top of that, every day has a goal that we try to hit and if we hit the goal then we call the mission pres at night and say "Mission acomplished." Only on a mission....but yeah the goals were stuff like set up 10 adds for later in the week, hand out 15 book of mormons and get the people who you gave the Bom's to contact info, confirm 15 people for church, crazy stuff like thatt. It was great and all, but i dont think i'll be complaining too much when we have full studies and full time to eat food.

Our investigators right now are doing well. J is still working toward a baptismal goal for the 5th of March. It's really hard to tell how W is doing, .  he'll randomly be like "I love coming to church" and we're like yay.  DX  is looking good to be baptized on the 19th of March. And brother Feng continues to pound through the Book of Mormon. He's almost finished with alma and he's only had the book for a month or two. Besides that not much exciting happened this week...and by that i mean a ton of exciting stuff happened but i forgot it all :O

So yeah in personal study this week i came across Psalms 19:12 - "Who can understand his errors? Cleanse thou me from secret faults." I think this is so true - we may think we're doing everything really well, but God will help us see our faults, where we can improve, and then through the Atonement of Christ overcome them.

Love you guys and hope you have an awesome week!!

Elder Nelson

February16, 2016 Chinese New Year

February 9, 2016

Sry dont have a lot of t ime butt...

Don't worryyyy all is fine after the earthquake over here. Like you observed, the worst of it was in tainan. The place where i was in really wasn't affected that much. I think all the buildings were good and everything. It happened at like 3 in the morning. So i kinda just woke up and was like WHAT IS GOING ON WHY IS THE APARTMENT SHAKING. and i just kinda laid there in my bed until it stopped shaking then got up went to the bathroom and went back to bed. haha the next day i wasnt sure whether i had dreamed about it or not until we got a call asking if we were all okay. The only damage we had over here was my pile of flashcards got knocked off of my desk. We haven't really been helping out with cleaning up anything bc there isnt really anything to be cleaned  up.

Other random stuff that happened this week..I got knocked by a scooter onto the hood of a car. He told me to be more careful and drove off lol. We made stuffed bell peppers which was cool. Last week we visited a place called 佛光山 (fo guang shan) which is like this big buddhist place. I'll try to send some pics.We met with a guy named b this week who told us that he knows that the Book of Mormon is true but he can't join the church because of conflicts with 拜拜'ing(worshipping) his ancestors. FRUSTRATING. We also met a dude named w who's super interested in the church and the direction that it can bring to his life, so i'll keep you updated on him.Its been kinda hard to meet with people recently because of chinese new year and everything which btw is crazy. We literally have a member feeding us every lunch and dinner of this week. Like its just barely started but we've already been fed A TON of food more details on that to come next week.

This week in personal study i came upon one of my favorite scrips in D&c 122 "The Son of man hath descended below them all, art thou greater than He?" I know that the Atonement of Jesus Christ is real. I know that because of Him, we can overcome our trials and we are able to find peace and hope which simply just cannot be found anywhere else. I love my savior. and i love you all! I hope you have a great week!

Love,
Elder Nelson

HERRROOOO FAMIRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Heyyyyy so super bummer that my email didn't go through last week. There must have been a glitch in the system or something. I just sent it again so hopefully it gets through. Taiwan didn't skip a beat after the earthquake. Like you said senor, just kept on scooting on haha.

NONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONO! THIS CANNOT BE TRUE ABOUT SMEAGOL'S FOOT. PLEASE TELL ME THAT THEY WERE WRONG PLEASE NO HE WAS GETTING READY TO FLYYYY. Also he should definitely take preap precal level's a joke. :)

Another project checked off the list for super woman :)

How many hardy boys have they gotten for you up to now senor?

The NIH stuff sounds super boss. What cool stuff did you read about for this go around?

That science tidbit sounds pretty BOSS. What exactly does that mean for scientists now?

What are you and comp subbing for cold contacts? <---- i have no idea what this means

So yeahhhhhhhh this week i got really sick. Like Monday continued the chinese new year celebration with lots of food but monday night after teaching a lesson i soon began to feel really nauseous and ended up puking my guts up the entire night. I dont know how that much food fit in there in the first place. Just when i thought stuff was done coming up more and more kept coming. So then Tuesday i was in all day for the first time on my mission. We felt bad!. All 4 of us (me my, my companion, and the sisters) all got it but no one else that we ate with that day got it. So yeah after that day in we were able to go out again but our stomachs haven't been the same since. Like diarrhea, not feeling like eating stuff, etc. Kinda unfortunate.

Move call came this Saturday and...drumroll...im not moving! And neither is my companion. We're going to be together in the same area for another movecall together at least.

In terms of fooodddd since we were sick a lot of families that had invited us over for chinese new year food made this stuff called  (zhou), this rice porridge type stuff then besides that when our stomach's were okay/before the incident we ate a lot of 火鍋, hot pot. Hot pot is basically what you saw in one of those pictures where they have a kind of soup  in a big pot over a propane fire then throw in a bunch of vegetables, meats, and other random asian stuff. and surprisingly a lot of members got pizza for us for the celebration as well haha.

The weather was starting to feel like summer again then today it randomly got nice weather so we'll see how long that lasts.

In terms of investigators, that 11 year old boy ( part member family) passed his baptismal interview last night, and the elder who did the interview says he's super awesome and ready. So just have to figure out with the parents when the best time to get it done would be. We're gonna have a baptism! :)

In terms of investigators, j came to church! He was able to work his work schedule around it and he had a good time but it looks like he may have a hard time into the future to not work on Sunday because he feels like he HAS to for his kind of work. He was so funny though when we asked him some of his goals for the new year his first was "Get baptized" and his second was "Pay off his debt." We;re also still working with william who slept in and didn't make it to church on sunday. And then there's brother f

who is the most intersting guy. He's totally willing to read the book of mormon and to come to church but for some reason or another he will not pray. Apparently when he was younger in high school he was forced to pray and sing hyms because he went to a christian high school and now he's got this attitude like nobody can force him to do anything. He says when he feels like he should he will.

but yeah...that was pretty much the week. In personal study this week i really liked 1 Peter 3:15 : "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:" Jesus Christ has given us hope and happiness that can be seen by other people. We should always to be ready to testify of Him and the things we know to be true, especially to those whom we love the most.

Ilove you guys and hope you have an awesome week!!

February 1, 2016

HERRO FAMIRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

How was this week?

Ahhh senor you evil minstrel! you should have known! Im really surprised it got there that fast, normally it takes 2 months not 2 weeks. Oh well, happy early bday ;)

If you start learning Chinese senor, we could converse when I got back AND you could go serve a mission with mom in Taiwan later. :)

Wow thats kinda lame. found Phil's car like 2 days too late. So how does that work now then?

Hows the chapter coming?

That zika thing sounds sketchy, is it pretty serious?

You're having the missionaries over for dinner? BLESS YOU. haha you only realize how awesome that is once you're out here i guess. what are you gonna make? I think im gonna take the missionaries out all the time when i get back. Probably to taco bell though bc ill have no money.

Does Annie really think she can quit her job and come down here full time?
Sounds like you're staying busy mommy

I did use a blanket when it got pretty cold for those couple days. I even whipped out the winter jammy's. Weather is back up to Usual taiwanese winter, a nice cool temp outside although on Saturday i was sweating profusely in the afternoon.

My comp is a nice guy. He's one of those guys who's big into internet type stuff like games, and other random stuff online. He's also not a big fan of contacting people on the streets so we're trying to find ways where he can have faith in the work as well. Luckily, we share a passion for cooking ;).

Anyways so this week lets seeeee.

Our cooking adventures continued. Some highlights from the week: perfecting the homemade tortilla and making burritos out of them, homemade pizza (we literally smashed tomatoes, reduced them to paste and added spices as well as making our own crust), taro smoothie (also added fruits, milk and yogurt, and banana bread (we kind of cheated on this one - got a recipe from someone else). Some of the stuff has to be adjusted because we just have a tiny toaster oven to work with haha. Also if you were to send me some recipes mommy like your homemade bread, how you make noodles, other good stuff, i would not be opposed ;)

This upcoming Sunday is the New Year's eve for Chinese new year's. Apparently it's absolutely crazy here and you get absolutely no missionary work done. They have a list outside of the bishop's office to cooridnate when people are going to have us over for food because everyone wants the missionaries over for food haha. Its nuts. Also for your bit of culture, last night as we were biking home they had the street almost entirely blocked off shooting off fireworks, with a bunch of college aged kids doing some kind of yell/chant with painted faces and stuff (think mulan with the dragon suit thing). Not sure if starting to celebrate early or what.

I cant remember if i told you about James? His Chinese name is 林學儒. He's a super bro, super big into swimming which is strange for a Taiwanese. He was a former investigator. We called and set him up and we've met with him a few times. It seems like he has a lot more desire now than he did previously to progress towards baptism. After we shared the Plan of Salvation with him all he said was "wow." He told us he wants to go to 高榮國度 (the Celestial Kingdom). Only concern with him right now is that he works almost every Sunday and that is when business is best so send prayers his way that he will be able to not have to work on Sunday.

In terms of 馮順天, his wife and daughter got baptized this week which was super exciting. He often has to go back and forth between 高雄 (where we are) and 台北 (Taipei - up north). So last week we weren't in contact with him hardly at all. He came to church on Sunday though and continues to read the Book of Mormon. He is a genuine seeker of truth, which to be honest is pretty rare. so pray that he will be able to recognize the answer that he has already received!

And then we're working with a part member family where the wife is a little more less active and the son isn't baptized. We're trying to get the son baptized. He's a goofy, funny little kid who likes usual stuff that kids like (playing video games, wrestling with his brother, food etc). He has a testimony, I know he does, hes just a goofball haha.

I think i told you that a couple weeks ago we had that worldwide missionary broadcast. One thing that one of the speakers said was to always have Christ's name on our lips and always be ready to testify of Him and His Atonement. I think this is awesome advice for us as missionaries and for everyone back home. If we always have Him in our thoughts, we will be able to easily see opporunities to share Him with others.

I love you guys so much and hope you have an awesome week!

Love,
Elder Nelson
