How was this week????

Smeag updated me on the ward split and said that the only notable thing was that steve is back in the ward lol. anything else interesting on that front?

Boss about the 9th planet. What are they calling it? Do they know anything about its properties?

Wow. Once again backups come in handy. Why do I feel like that happens so much to you senor? oh also random but did you like any of the songs that the people sent in for ethics that you hadnt heard before?

Are primaries happening already? and you know all the election stuff just doesnt seem as important when youre out here on a mission, not sure why..

Made a new creation where i wrapped chicken, spinach, tomato and broccoli in a wrap made out of egg  ( a thing that they do here with fried rice in the middle). I tried to send a picture of the creation.

Yes i celebrated MLK day by writing on my planner that it was MLK day haha

The smog will probably give me cancer some day but thats okay.

sounds like the potluck was a success mommy!

I cant believe paul is a deacon...thats just not right!

Also cant believe the stuff with amy...

you guys have to take videos of smeag running for me this year!

Hmmm so lets try and think of some random interesting stuff from this week. It randomly got super cold here. And by super cold i mean like 40s/50s and light rain. Mommy you'll be happy to know that i took advantage of the opportunity and wore my sweater vest for the first time to church on Sunday. The Taiwanese (especially Gao xiong people) are super hilarious about the cold. Like they act like they can't leave the house all day because they don't dare and then they have these humongous jackets when the weather drops below 60 degrees.

This week there was also a special broadcast done by some general authorities to missionaries over the entire world, which was super cool. all of the missionaries here in gao xiong met up at a chapel and watched it. I feel like i was able to get a lot of really needed revelation from it. Super sweet opportunity to be able to hear from inspired men.

We were also going to visit former investigators this week when we ran into a brother X. It was super sad. When we went up his narrow staircase we came upon him literally laying in a pile of trash. He told us that he had this sickness where he couldnt stand or walk so we have no idea how long he had been laying there before we came upon him. No idea if he has any interest in the gospel but we're going to try to go back soon and help him clean up a little bit.

We're working with a less active member right now named Y. ...and then he tells us that hes not even sure if the Book of Mormon is God's word. I feel like he's letting  events of the past get in the way of his testimony which is super sad.

We started teaching this 11 year old kid named DX who has family  members but he himself has not been baptized yet. And since he's already 8 he needs to be treated like any other investigator so we've been sharing the lessons with him.

We're also still meeting with Brother F,  He is the husband of the sisters' investigator who will be getting baptized this Sunday. I really respect him a lot, because he doesnt want to just blindly get baptized or anything. He wants to obtain an answer for himself about where the truth is. We've been talking a lot about receiving spiritual answers, what that's like, what he has to do to receive them, etc. Hes into 2 Nephi in the Book of Mormon . alsso he loves the Liahona. Read half the magazine of the general conference issue the first night he got it. Hes told us that he has received revelation from the book of mormon and he comes to church when he can. One of the strangest things though is that he at first wasnt willing to pray. Like he felt like he wanted to understand the book of mormon better and he felt like he could receive an answer without prayer. Anyways hes awesome and a genuine seeker of truth. When he receives his answer its going to be super cool.

I came upon a famous scripture in personal study this week, 2nd Nephi 2:25 "Adam fell that men might be, and men are that they may have joy." One of God's biggest hopes and purposes for us is to be happy in this life. When we are going through hard times we can remember that we have a loving Father in Heaven who is looking out for us and will help us to be able to be happy, as long as we follow His plan.

But yeah. That was pretty much the week. I love and miss you guys a ton!

January 18, 2016 Week 36

How are you guys this week??

Woowwwwwwww the ward is splitting, crazy. The work goes on in The Woodlands as well..

lol@the girl who asked if she had to buythe book in your class.

Thats pretty sweet that phil and mish found that antique book shop. Kinda fun.

Whats the plan for smeagol next summer?

lol i wish you guys could see how the elections work here. they drive around these huge cars with a bunch of scooters following behind. These cars have these huge megaphones attached yelling out a bunch of stuff. and they have these big pictures of the people's faces. Sometimes there are people on top of the car waving at you (picture princess diaries where theyre trying to teach princess mia how to wave). Some even stop for a little and blow off these fireworks. It's just a little different from how campaigning works in the US haha. But yeah all i know is Taiwan has a new president and her name is "English Cai" haha hadnt heard anything about threats from China or anything..

Whats the verdict on bro attaya?

Howd the potluck go momy?

Fun chance to see the gparents..

This week was a good one. Like i said in previous emails, we've been doing a lot of cooking inside recently and im not gonna lie ive been pretty proud of some of our creations. Among the best ones are omelettes, this chicken that we marinated in this salsa sauce we created, honey chicken, tortillas, bread, among others. Pretty soon we'll be learning authentic taiwanese stuff as well.

Its been raining a lot here recently, which means ive just been getting soaked because ive been too lazy to wear rain gear ( i forgot my rain gear in my last area).

There were some super cool miracles this week. Like i said last week, the sister zhang who i baptized in my last area's mom got baptized this last week AND this week i found out that her sister has now also been investigating the church and set a baptismal goal with the elders there. If that isn't cool enough, she was talking about the church with her cousin, who lives in the neighboring area to ours and he has interest in the gospel as well!  We also met a cool former investigator this week named James who seems super willing to learn and progress toward baptism. and met a really cool family who we will be meeting with this saturday. The dad's english name is javalosky lol. Oh and theres a family in our ward who's son  (almost 12) has not been baptized and the dad wants us to start teaching him and helping him to prepare for baptism so maybe we'll start seeing more people that we can teach?

Oh also random hilarious story. We were on the way home from visiting this investigator and this guy on a scooter just looks at us and starts yelling "Come to my house!" And at first we thought he was semi normal but as we began to follow him he continued to look over his shoulder every so often like a mad man yelling "come to my house!" we soon realized that he was crazy. So we come to outside his apartment and hes like "Come to my house!" and we tell him sorry we have to go somewhere else and at this point the guy is like shaking and very possibly on some kind of drug. So we start to bike away and we get to a red light and then out of nowhere this guy pops up and starts yelling "come to  my house!" again. So we had to try to lose him haha it was an interesting night.

In personal study this week i really was struck by Job 36:24-25 "Remember that thou magnify his work, which men behold.Every man may see it; man may behold it afar off." As we follow the commandments of God and become true followers of Jesus Christ people notice and want to have the same happiness that we enjoy.

I love you guys so much and hope you have an awesome week!!!11

January 11, 2015 New Companion from Plano, TX

I focused on getting some pics out of Christmas and our last P-day excursion so we'll see how much time i have to write out an email. Those pics on the beach and of the fort were where we went last Monday it was super cool, its an island called qi jin. That fort used to protect gao xiong. Also i couldnt resist and went for a little run along the beach. It was GREAT. Couldn't actually go swimming but we made the most of it.

Sounds like you went crazy on the projects this week mommy! You gotta rest more ;)

Do you know what part of gao xiong the lady is from???? like if i knew the her whole family members?

So good to hear about everything happening on that end. Oh btw i got the Ward's package please tell them thank you for me!!!! It was super sweet of them, they got me a bunch of missionary goodies.

So cant remember what all i said about my comp last week. He's from Plano Texas so we have defied the odds and now have a power Texas companionship. He's 22, worked and studied for a year at BYU-I in computer science before coming out. He's a really interesting guy and I think we're gonna do a lot of great stuff together.. He's a total bro.

Food we've been eating inside and ive been loving it. Ive recently been having chicken breast and sweet potatoes for dinner. dont worry i also get a taste of the taiwanese flavor every once in a while from members, eating out etc. We're hoping we can learn how to make some authentic chinese food either from members or finding a cook book. That way i can make some real Taiwanese food for you guys when i get back ;)

Scooters are crazy as ever. Nearly got blown off my bike a few times this week as usual lol

The humidity still exists. Havent had to stop wearing short sleeves yet

Investigators are kinda hard to find right now to be honest. I feel like a lot of areas with sisters are like this because i hate to be sexist but it seems like a large majority of the prepared souls in Taiwan are girls. Thats not to say there arent a lot of really awesome guys out there too its just that more often than not you see the wife and kids get baptized and the husband doesnt. We've met a lot of cool people but they're all kinda busy until after 過年.

Random stuff from this week...i discovered these things called nutrition biscuits that they sell in every 7 for 16 kuai that taste like a better version of animal crackers. Me and my companion experimented this week with adding flour and water together and trying different variations of tortillas, rolls etc. It was pretty much the best thing ever. I was surprised from those two ingredients how good of a tortilla we could make. Might use it with eggs for the mornings. I tried two fruits for the first time this week - wax apple and persimmon. Not sure if they exist in america or not.

John 20:26 was a good reminder this week. It says something along the lines of blessed are they that have not seen and yet believed (similar thought seen when alma visits the zoramites). One of the biggest testimony strengtheners to me has been seeing people change their lives on their missions. They may not see God, but the feelings that they have through Christ are real and can be felt by all!

Love and miss you guys a ton and hope you have an awesome week!

January 4, 2015 New Companion

Happy New Year!!!!!!!!! Did y'all actually stay up this year? Or were you like me and went to bed at 10:30? haha

Brother Williamsssssss how are they doing? Holland's probably huge now right? What did his dad say about their mission in Indonesia? Speaking of mission presidents, they told us who our new mission president is going to be. His name is Teh, apparently he's a member of the 70 or something right now. He'll be coming on board in July i believe.

Yup Elder June is gone. My new companion's name is Elder Weatherford. we get along well. He's a very interesting guy - i.e. has this theory about how the universe began from a black hole when space turned itself inside out, wants to grow plants in our apartment, etc. He just came down from Tai zhong so thats cool. Excited to find some really cool people who are ready to hear the gospel with him.

Talking to a lot of scooter people? Is that even a question? haha we talk to so many people on scooters every day. "Hello! How are you? Have you ever heard of Jesus Christ before? Well guess what i have a message that can change your life. Do you have a minute to go to the side of the road?" Then they zoom off..

Oh there's a picture of me on the blog? Yeah thats probably brother huang. I sent some pics with him home. This last week taking him to church it was pouring rain so we got absolutely drenched. We were dripping up our apartment during studies haha.

hahahaha how did you guys get a straight up bird in the house? Thats hilarious i can just imagine senor making some comment about how he lives with animals.

Downton Abbey classic.

2 books a year, thats not bad all things considering. Hows the new John Grisham?

Time seriously is a weird thing...years really aren't that long. I blinked and im already serving a mission. Feels like just yesterday Phil was going off to Boise.

Sounds like you got a decently busy schedule over the next couple weeks senor. Should be fun too though. you'll have to keep me updated.

Im pumped for this track season with smeag! You'll have to take some pics/videos for me.

Oooooh new cardio equipment at the Y, you'll have to check it out mommy ;) i feel like theyre always switching out equipment there but its never much better quality..

Yeah here its still pretty warm every day...

Chinese new years is in february, and apparently like when it comes you just cannot do any missionary work because everyone goes back to their homes where they grew up in the rural areas and eats lots of food. Kind of like our christmas.

Yeah i hope we can be doing more teaching and less finding as well. Right now we really only have like 2 people who we're consistenly meeting with, brother hong and brother lee. Brother hong's wife thinks we're just some foreigner church tho and thinks its kind of a waste of time while he really likes it and thinks it will be good for his kids. Soo thats a problem. And then brother lee we have really great lessons and hes like super great then we dont hear from him for two weeks. So yeah. We have a lot of cool potential investigators right now but they're all super busy like all the time.

Oh also my companion said he would be willing to start eating inside so we may be trying to do a little cooking inside. If you have any good recipe ideas let me know ;)

This week in personal study I really liked D&C 108:7-8. I kind of think of it as my mission motto, or at least one of then. We have to do our very best to strengthen others and in turn God will strengthen us.

I love and miss you guys a ton! I hope you have a great week and an awesome new year!!
